Geronimo, Knebworth House, Sat 30 June – Sun 1 July
Geronimo is the ultimate family festival that’s known as ‘Glasto for Kids’. Now in its 4th year, Geronimo will continue to celebrate its success at Arley Hall in Cheshire, but it’s venturing further afield, and has chosen a new field, or rather parkland, at Knebworth House. On the main stage you can expect to see Justin Fletcher and Mr Bloom among other talented and friendly faces. Delights on the ground include activities with two circuses, a Victorian fun fair, den building, zip wires, family crafts, a gaming bus, willow weaving and more. Once you’ve bought a ticket, most of the activities are free, and a day ticket (£25) includes entrance to the Dino Trail at Knebworth House.
Standon Calling, Thurs 26 July – Sun 29 July
The Big One. You’ll probably know that Standon Calling always sells out so even though we’re still chilly in March, it’s time to get booking. Book your bell tent, book your baby in with Mortimer Nannies (you can actually do this), and get ready to groove with Bryan Ferry, Paloma Faith and Goldfrapp. If you look at the website you’ll be jumping up and down like an excited bean – the line up is amazing.
Sundown Cinema, 13 June – 2 September, locations in Herts, Beds and Suffolk
Just look at this photo! You can smell the lavender, can’t you? The lavender at Hitchin Lavender (which won best Family Attraction in last year’s Muddy awards) isn’t quite this colour yet, but it will be. There are also rows of sunflowers, making it the most spectacularly colourful family day out. Come summer, come nightfall, and the big screens are unfurled. Sundown Cinema is a local company popping up in all kinds of venues, from The Cricketers pub in Weston, to Luton Hoo and Duxford and Ickworth in Suffolk. These screenings sell out months in advance, so fingers on the mice as soon as you can. The season kicks off with The Lost Boys at Hitchin Lavender on Weds 13 June, which yes, you’ve guessed it, has already sold out. You have been warned!
St Albans Film Festival, 26 June – 1 July
This film festival is growing each year and it has everything you could wish for. A stunning setting, delicious food, great films and a wonderful buzz about the event. The programme hasn’t actually been released yet, but should you be a budding film maker, or have one hiding away at home, you are invited to submit a film. There’s a great choice of categories: music video, short doc, animation, drama and comedy. There’s even a category for younger film makers, aged 5 – 15. Deadline 30 April.
Chilfest, Fri 6 and Sat 7 July
Tony, you are so smooth! And yes, Tony is headlining at the wonderful Chilfest in Tring this year. He’s in good company, and his guests include Alison Limerick and Mica Paris. You can also look forward to a starry line up including: Marc Almond, Kim Wilde, Go West, Hazel O’Connor and Johnny Hates Jazz. So yes, we are talking about a certain era that I remember very well indeed.
The Little Welly, Herts Showground, St Albans, Sat 7 – Sun 8 July
This is a festival about mud. No, it’s not Glasto, but Little Welly. It’s an obstacle course and a festival rolled (in mud) into one. It’s in various locations: Kent, Surrey and Oxfordshire and it arrives in Herts at the beginning of July. Hay bales, tyres, army walls, spider tunnel, in and out ditches, log fence and water pit. Who ever said that children today don’t have enough exercise?
