Ajit Gill

Drummer and producer Ajit took a two-year RSL Extended Diploma in Live Music Performance with us from 2014 to 2016, and has since gradated with First Class Hons from ICMP.  We talked to him about life at HCM, how it’s helped him and what he’s up to now.

How did HCM Music School help you achieve your musical goals?

During my time at HCM, I had some great drum lessons with HCM drum teachers who showed me so much! HCM pushed me closer towards the goals and aspirations I had. It allowed to me explore my creative boundaries, learn more about the realities of the music industry and help me take the right steps towards the next part of my music career.

What exciting projects do you have coming up?

I’m currently playing drums in a duo called Vertaal with Theo Howarth (keys). We make progressive jazz-funk, while flirting with the sounds of hip-hop, electronic soul and many other kinds of exotic melodies. Our influences include artists such as Yussef Kamaal, Haitus Kaiyote, Robert Glasper and Alfa Mist, and our live shows see a host of guest musicians, such as Severin Bruhin (bass), Luca Gianassi (guitar)  Simon Todd (percussion) and Loren Hignell (saxophone), improvising on our original songs, making each performance unique. We’re looking to release our second EP earlier next year. I’m also working on my own solo project and producing for three other new artists.
